How to Cultivate Self-Awareness and Find Your Best True Self

Of the many factors that contribute to personal growth, self-awareness is one of the most important. It’s true that for many, personal growth is about achieving specific monetary goals, milestones, or accomplishments, and there’s no doubt that having specific aspirations can be an effective motivator.

But the more impactful aspects of personal growth often involve developing healthy thought patterns and behaviors that enable fulfillment in all aspects of our lives.

And cultivating our self-awareness is critical to that.

How Self-Awareness Helps Us Grow

Personal growth is about nurturing our own talents and strengths and becoming a more fully self-actualized individual, whether or not that includes professional or material aspirations.

Once we become more in tune with our own authentic desires, opinions and values, we tend to excel and become more satisfied overall. Accomplishments, effective performance and well-being are a natural follow on to that evolution.

To achieve personal growth, we need to openly explore ourselves.

The name for this process is self-discovery. And the first stage of self-discovery is to become more self-aware. Let’s explore why self-awareness is critical to personal growth and how we can cultivate self-awareness in our own lives.

What Does It Mean To Be Self-Aware?

Self-awareness is the ability to recognize and understand our own thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

It involves being able to examine ourselves objectively and identify our strengths and weaknesses.

When we are self-aware, we have a better understanding of our motivations and can make more informed decisions.

We are also able to recognize how our actions affect others and take responsibility for our behavior.

There are two different aspects to self-awareness.

The first is understanding what is actually going on inside of us: our thoughts, our emotions, our influences, and why we choose certain behaviors.

The second kind of self-awareness is about understanding, objectively, how we are perceived by others.

Why is Self-Awareness Important?

Self-awareness is the foundation of personal growth. Without self-awareness, it is difficult to make meaningful changes in our lives.

When we are not aware of our own thoughts and behaviors, we are more likely to repeat patterns that are not serving us.

Self-awareness allows us to identify these patterns and make conscious choices about how to respond to them.

Self-awareness is also important because it helps us truly connect to our own values, beliefs, and priorities.

Being true to ourselves becomes easier when we make the effort to articulate what is truly important to us and make an effort to promote those values in our lives.

Understanding how others perceive us is also important.

Self-awareness helps us to understand other’s perspectives better and helps is to expand our own capabilities of empathy and compassion.

Improving self-awareness helps to resolve dissonance between our real and ideal selves, and has a positive impact on our mental health, relationships, and overall well-being.

Healthy Strategies

Cultivating self-awareness takes time and effort, but it is a worthwhile pursuit.

There are many healthy strategies that we can use to boost our self-awareness.

Journaling

Journaling is one of the most effective ways to increase self-awareness. Writing down our feelings can help us gain clarity and perspective into our own thought patterns and behaviors. It is also a good way to track our progress. Try to journal for a few minutes each day. Over time, you will find that specific themes and issues emerge. This process helps us identify areas for personal growth. For inspiration, check out Self-Discovery Journal Prompts.

Meditation and Mindfulness

Meditation is another powerful tool for cultivating self-awareness. By focusing on our breath and observing our thoughts, we can learn to detach from emotions and gain a more objective perspective.

Start with just a few minutes of meditation per day and gradually increase the duration.

If meditation is not for you, there are many other effective ways to become mindful.

Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and observing our thoughts and feelings without judgment.

As noted above, meditation is a common mindfulness practice, but there are many other options. An effective way to incorporate mindfulness into our routine can be to take a few moments to focus on our breath before starting a task.

Other potential means to be more mindful or establish a mindfulness routine are discussed in Living Mindfully without Meditation.

Therapy

Therapy can be an excellent way to explore thoughts and feelings in a safe and supportive environment. A trained therapist can help us identify patterns of behavior that may be holding us back and provide practical strategies for achieving personal growth.

Today, there are a wide variety of options for how to obtain therapy.

Online options that emerged during the pandemic have helped to open up access for individuals in rural areas and have also reduced the cost of therapy.

Check out Advantages of Online Therapy for more information.

Self-Reflection

It helps if we take time each day to reflect on our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Asking ourselves questions like “How do I feel right now?” or “What thoughts are going through my mind?” can help us develop a more nuanced understanding of our own inner world.
