We have included information about symptoms, treatments and prevalence in the hopes of sparking further conversation and heightening awareness while fostering empathy, support, and effective intervention for ourselves, those we care about, and society.

In addition, we hope that the statistics and data shared here will help to underscore the impact of mental health conditions on the world and the urgency to more effectively address mental health on a global scale.

Most Common Mental Health Conditions: Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions, encompassing a range of disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobias.

Anxiety disorders are pervasive, affecting a substantial portion of the population.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 264 million people worldwide suffer from an anxiety disorder, making it the most prevalent mental health condition globally.

In the United States, anxiety disorders affect 18.1% of the adult population each year, underscoring the profound impact of these conditions on the population and society.

Those affected by anxiety disorders often experience persistent and excessive worry, fear, and physical symptoms such as palpitations, sweating, and trembling.

Treatment typically involves therapy, medication, or a combination of both, with cognitive-behavioral therapy being particularly effective.

Mental Health Conditions: Major Depressive Disorder

Major depressive disorder, often referred to as depression, is another pervasive mental health condition.

It is characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, and feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness.

It can also manifest through physical symptoms like changes in appetite and sleep disturbances.

Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide, with an estimated 264 million individuals affected.

The prevalence of depression varies across different demographics and age groups, with an overall global prevalence of around 4.4%.

In the United States, major depressive disorder affects approximately 7.1% of adults in any given year, making it a significant public health concern.

Treatment may involve psychotherapy, medication, lifestyle changes, and in severe cases, electroconvulsive therapy.

Mental Health Conditions: Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder, sometimes referred to as manic-depressive disorder, involves extreme fluctuations in mood, ranging from depressive episodes to manic or hypomanic states.

People with bipolar disorder may experience intense periods of elevated energy, impulsivity, and decreased need for sleep during manic episodes, followed by profound depressive episodes.

Schizophrenia affects an estimated 20 million people worldwide; however, its prevalence varies by region.

It is a condition that profoundly affects the lives of those impacted and their families.

The societal impact of schizophrenia underscores the importance of increased awareness, access to treatment, and support services.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

After a person experiences a traumatic event, they may develop PTSD. This may lead to symptoms such as intrusive memories, flashbacks, hypervigilance, and emotional detachment.

Therapies like cognitive processing therapy and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) are used to treat PTSD. Medications and support from loved ones may also help.

The prevalence of PTSD is influenced by exposure to trauma, and its impact is far-reaching.
